This year’s winner, Peyton Walton, is a Junior at Virginia City High School. He wowed the judges with his electric guitar performance. “I started out taking lessons on an acoustic guitar,” he said. “When my dad bought me an electric guitar, I just taught myself.” He credits Eddie Van Halen as his inspiration. Walton also attends WNC as part of the Jump Start program. He says he plans to attend UNR when he graduates high school and earn a business degree. “I hope to play guitar professionally, but I’m still going to get my college degree, in case I need something to fall back on,” he grinned.

Walton will go on to compete at the Area competition later this month. The winner of that event will compete at the District level in late April. Winning students receive cash prizes. The first-place winner at the District level will win $1,000.00.
